Greek culture with a side of dancing was on the menu at Langford's Ruth King Elementary School.
As part of its ongoing community outreach initiative, the team behind Victoria’s Greek Fest visited the school to serve a traditional Greek lunch for all students and staff.
During assembly, the kids also enjoyed a performance by a trio of Hellenic dancers, who had them all up on their feet after a demonstration.
The Greek Fest team also presented a $2,000 donation to the school for its hot lunch program.
Ruth King is one of many schools to benefit from the festival’s growing community outreach initiative. The team also recently added Tillicum Elementary School and McKenzie Elementary in Saanich to the list.
“Giving back is central to everything we do,” said Tim Petropoulos, president of the Victoria and Vancouver Island Greek Community. “Supporting schools and feeding children in need is a privilege and a responsibility we proudly embrace.
“We hope to continue expanding to even more schools across the region.”
For vice president Jim Koutougos, the school visits are a highlight of his year.
“There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing the joy on the children’s faces and knowing we’ve made a difference.”
Greek Fest returns to Victoria in the summer across two weekends, offering live entertainment, delicious food and vibrant celebration.
The festival will be held at the Greek Community Centre (4648 Elk Lake Dr.), Aug. 22–24 and Aug. 29 to Sept. 1.
