Forget fireworks – Sooke’s blowing the roof off Canada Day with a free, sun‑soaked, all‑ages bash at Fred Milne Park that’s all about community and classic summer fun.
Just after sunrise, volunteers will roll out picnic tables and set up tents in the wide-open field at 2249 Sooke River Road – a new venue for the July 1 celebration, which moves this year from its longtime home at the Sooke River Campground to Fred Milne Park.
Festivities kick off at 10:30 a.m. with pipers, a colour guard, and a few words from local leaders – including MLA Dana Lajeunesse, Mayor Maja Tait and members of Sooke Council.
“This event is such a beautiful reflection of who we are as a community – generous, welcoming and full of heart,” says Mayor Tait. “Canada Day in Sooke is more than a celebration; it’s about connection. It’s where neighbours meet, volunteers shine, and our sense of community pride is on full display.”
By 11 a.m., the park will be buzzing.
There’s a kid zone packed with bouncy castles, balloon animals and games. Otter Point firefighters are running a dunk tank and water hose ball game, while the Lions Cook Shack handles the eats – burgers, fries, onion rings and smokies.
Around noon, volunteers will hand out free cupcakes, courtesy of local grocers.
This year’s Canada Day is all about boots‑on‑the‑ground action. No fences, no entry fee, no gimmicks, just a wide open field filled with families, volunteers and summertime noise.
The event is run by more than 50 volunteers from the Sooke Lions Club, Chamber of Commerce, District of Sooke and local community groups – the same folks who’ll be packing up tables long after the last cupcake is gone.
