Some volunteer hands are needed to harvest plans for community agriculture.
The BX Swan Lake Community Association is forming a Friends of sncəcmałqtn Agricultural Park committee for the East Vernon Road property.
The park's name, sncəcmałqtn, translates to 'place of small crops or garden.'
There are already some plans in place for the park, with two small plot licenses issued and a few more going through the application process and a large lease issued for hay farming.
Now Friends of the Park are needed to help steer its future.
"As the ‘Friends of SAP’ gets going in this spring we have a number of projects proposed and will be announced in mid March," said president Paul Williamson.
"We are currently planning on hosting an invasive weed pull of Scotch thistle again this year with three elementary schools involved."
People are sought that have one or more of the following:
• practical hands-on experience related to farming and farm infrastructure;
• farm management experience;
• an education background;
• experience in plant and invasive weed identification;
• experience in ecological land stewardship;
• a reasonable level of fitness and mobility;
• capable of working with farm/garden hand tools;
• a strong community spirit;
The committee will provide day to day support to the park on-site coordinator, support other community groups and tenants of the park, engage in on site projects, maintenance and supervision, and organize and participate in onsite community events.
It will also advise the sncəcmałqtn (BXR) project working group of the Regional District of North Okanagan on longer term actions, budget priorities and day to day operations.
