Members of the Hough Memorial Cancer Fund Society received a sweet surprise during a meeting in June at the Seniors Activity Centre in Williams Lake.
Williams Lake's newly-formed Apple Pie Society said it wanted to thank Hough Memorial members for all their years of service and presented each member with a home-made apple pie.
"Our purpose is to recognize individuals or groups who have given outstanding volunteer service to the community and we totally feel that you deserve all these apple pies," said Bette McLennan as she and other members of the society delivered the pies.
Along with the apple pies they also handed out hand-made cards.
Formed in 1972 by Lillian Hough after her husband died of an undetected brain tumor, the society has raised over $3 million toward the purchase of cancer detection equipment for Cariboo Memorial Hospital.
Purchases have included the first mammogram unit and a digital machine to read scopes.
When asked how they felt about receiving the pies, Hough Memorial members replied "ecstatic," in unison.
In April 2024, the society announced it was folding due to a lack of volunteers.
Mary Telford, of Hough Memorial, said it will take about a year to wrap everything up. Any leftover funds will be given to the Cariboo Foundation Hospital Trust and or Williams Lake Hospice Society.
"The Cariboo Foundation Hospital Trust is going to continue purchasing cancer detecting equipment for the hospital," Telford said.
Last month the Apple Pie Society presented a pie to Robin Dawes to thank her for her efforts toward improvements for the Williams Lake Cross Country Ski Club's Bull Mountain area.
The next pie award will be given out in September.
