As we approached putting the last few bales in the barn, a little elation set in. Thoughts turned to a summer vacation — actually during the warm weather! It doesn’t happen often on a farm or ranch as most seasons are busy, needless to say.
This year it was different for us working as a family with three generations putting time and energy into the haying operation. We are, as most are, attempting to get the hay up fast from the cutting to baling to putting it into the barn. In doing so we will try faster more reliable equipment.
But what has made the most difference is the extended family working together and the growing capabilities of the younger generation. Fewer breakdowns, better maintenance, and better judgement as to crop readiness for various stages of hay production, all make for better hay.
A reminder here is necessary because hot sun and a wind makes drying better and faster, although not too dry so as to require night or early morning baling. Too dry means that leaves get “thrashed”, that is, knocked off the stems and therefore the hay loses its high protein value.
Net wrapping of bales helps keep the leaves during the baling process.
When we live in a beautiful region, it is good to take advantage of the good weather for rest and relaxation. As they say, the ranch will still be there when one gets back from holiday, barring ravaging by wildfire.
The purpose of holidays is to refresh one’s energy and attitude towards the stewarding responsibilities and opportunities of life on the land.
Here we hope and go!
