MLA’s CORNER: Make your voice heard on emergency management

British Columbians deserve a say in the process

Public engagement in our political process is one of the cornerstones of our democracy.

Holding proper consultation and engagement sessions for those affected by consequential legislation is the bare minimum we should expect from our government. You deserve to have your voice heard.

Unfortunately, that has often not been the case with this NDP government. We have seen it time and time again, as David Eby and the NDP rush to bring forward huge pieces of legislation without properly consulting those who will be affected by the changes.

We saw it with Bill 36, which was one of the largest changes to the structure of the healthcare system in the history of our province, yet the NDP failed to properly consult healthcare workers and others who would be impacted. When our BC United team tried to raise their concerns, The NDP closed debate and rammed through the bill.

It happened again when the NDP recklessly fast-tracked the decriminalization of hard and dangerous drugs without the proper guardrails in place, ignoring the concerns of communities. This decision left many municipalities without support, forcing them to take their own action to deal with the rampant increase of open drug use.

And now we’re seeing it again with dock owners in Pender Harbour who are having their property rights threatened by this government with no proper engagement.

Enough is enough — British Columbians deserve a say in the process.

This past fall the NDP brought forward their emergency management legislation. I voiced concerns I’d heard from my constituents that the bill does not facilitate quicker recovery for those displaced from their homes and leaves the same existing gaps with Disaster Financial Assistance (DFA) and compensation.

Yet in typical NDP fashion, the government passed the bill first and is now asking for public opinion after the fact by holding a public engagement session that ends Jan 31st.

Send David Eby and the NDP a message that you deserve to be involved in the process by providing a written submission with your feedback on the bill to modernizeEM@gov.bc.ca.
