It’s the last day of February. What can we expect from March, spring? Or more November weather?
February was designated as Kindness month. How about carrying that over to March?
Good news. DeDe DeDerose is the new chancellor of Thompson Rivers University. DeDe is a member of the Esk’etemc Nation (Alkali Lake.) Her family is well known in local ranching and rodeo circles. Her mother is Cecilia DeRose, who taught Secwepemctsin (Shuswap language) and culture in Williams Lake schools. DeDe’s background is teaching, and she is known as leader in Indigenous education.
Congratulations to Mayor Surinderpal Rathor who has received a Queen Elizabeth 11 platinum Jubilee pin which is awarded to those who have given outstanding service to their communities. MP Todd Doherty presented the pin to the mayor who has an impressive record — over four decades of dedicated community service as well as being a long time member of Williams Lake City Council.
Not good news. Last week firefighters were battling eight hectares of wildfire in the Chetwynd area. Zombie fires (underground blazes left over from last year’s fires) are a problem in parts of the province. Question. If we don’t get huge amounts of something wet in the next two months, what kind of wildfires can we expect this summer? Is B.C. ready for a repeat of last year - or worse?
Another question. There have been a lot of transportation troubles reported recently, ferries out of service because of rudder problems or whatever, aircraft grounded for a number of reasons, motor vehicles recalled, trains derailed. What’s the problem, lack of maintenance, construction errors or more media coverage of such incidents?
A recent Facebook post made me laugh. It was a picture of an old wooden outside toilet with the caption “Gender Neutral for over 200 years.”
