The European Union says this summer was the hottest in recorded history. The period from June to August (summer in the Northern Hemisphere) was the world's hottest since their records began in 1940. (There are records going back to the 1850 pre-industrial period.) This isn’t the end of it, scientists warn. It’s just the latest report on global heat records, not the last. This summer, people across the globe suffered wicked heatwaves, droughts, and record-breaking wildfires and storms, but in spite of the evidence, many insist it’s all normal, that the scientists are mistaken about climate change, and everything is A-OK.
Our world has been warming for decades, faster in the last few. Would it really damage us to prepare a bit for the long term -- just in case?

On a happier note, congratulations to Wilbur Saunders, Donna Barnett, Dale Taylor and Tammy Tugnum on their receiving King Charles 111 Coronation medals. The four are well known for their volunteer work in making this area a “better place to live.“ MLA Lorne Doerkson presented the awards at a special luncheon.

More positive news. The city, the regional district and the Chamber of Commerce have gotten together to do something about attracting and keeping professional people in the area. The three hosted a meeting on Sept 5 attended by community members from business, governments and volunteer organizations. The session was the first step in the creation of groups to work on a number of key initiatives set by those in attendance. According to reports, the plans include addressing daycare shortages, developing local professional development and education opportunities, creating an affordable housing plan and building a multi-purpose recreation facility.
Anyone who has ideas and would like to get involved is asked to contact the Chamber of Commerce.
