Welcome to summer.
Graduation ceremonies were a big event last week for area families, including ours. My great-grandson Hayden French graduated from Lake City Secondary School. Congratulations to him and all the grads - may you meet happiness and success as you step into the next chapter of your lives. The world you are entering isn’t so wonderful at the moment, but hopefully your generation can make it better.
I missed the parade due to old age infirmities, but from all quarters I hear it was excellent, thanks to organizer Jenn French and her team.
Another education - related story is not so good. According to reports, unhappy parents and some students attended a School District 27 board meeting to express their concerns over violence and bullying in local schools. It’s disturbing, schools should be safe, but I guess it’s not surprising that the ill-feelings and conflicts between people in society in general are being reflected in our schools.
As I write this the strikes at Gibraltar and the CRD continue. Let’s hope the differences are resolved soon.
Then there’s the Edmonton/Florida hockey finals. By the time this column is in print, we’ll know if the Oilers are in or out. I hope in, it’s time the Stanley Cup came home. After all, hockey is OUR GAME.
B.C.’s upcoming election is getting more attention as the date gets closer. The new Conservatives are busy courting popularity while BC United is licking its wounds over some members defecting to the Conservatives. Conservative leader John Rustad and BC United leader Kevin Falcon are getting snarly.
How will it end? Will people vote along party lines? For the “best” leader? For a particular candidate? Or will they choose not to vote? Whatever, the race should be entertaining for political junkies.
