Except for five days at home, I was in the hospital from April 2 until May 12. During that time, I didn’t have my own phone, no TV or computer, until May 16. It was like being in a different world. Now I’m getting settled in Cariboo Age Care, another different world.
I did get snippets of news from visitors but that isn’t the same as seeing it happen. I know we have a new federal government, new prime minister, and that both the opposition and NDP leaders lost their seats. I understand Pierre Poilievre isn’t giving up. It would be interesting to see what Parliament would be like without him, even for a few weeks.
I know the city has everlasting issues with the homeless, and that parents are raising a big fuss over bullying in the schools. I can’t remember parents being so angry with a school district before.

“It’s the 24th of May, the Queen’s birthday, if we don’t get a holiday we’ll all run away.”
Does anyone remember that song? Or who the Queen was? Does it matter? We still get the holiday, even if it isn’t on Queen Victoria’s actual birthday.
The city of Victoria had its 125th Victoria Day parade, and many cities and smaller communities had biggish festivities last Monday to celebrate the birthday of Queen Victoria who died in 1901. She reigned for 63 years and 216 days. During her reign England saw changes (for the good ) in industrial, scientific activities, even in politics.
Rather than celebrate every monarch’s birthday individually, officials decided to join them with Victoria’s celebration and the date was changed to the last Monday before May 25—much better for holidayers. So last Monday celebrated King Charles 111’s birthday too.
