The celebration of Peggy McKinlay’s 100th birthday at the Senior’s Village last week was a happy event. Peggy is a charming and talented lady who is well known in the community at large and is admired and loved by all who know her.

She’s had a fascinating life, working in many different venues in the city, in later years she was a modern Chilcotin pioneer. Along the way she has written many songs, poems and stories.

The Village dining room was filled with well-wishers for her party. Her four children were there. MLA Lorne Doerkson and Mayor Surinderpal Rathor were on hand to celebrate with her. The refreshments included a magnificent birthday cake. LeRae Haynes and her group, who are no strangers to the village, sang happy songs for the celebrant. (The next day, Harry Jennings, also a village regular, had special songs for her.)

It was a lovely celebration for a lovely lady.

Sunday night’s fire was scary.  It started in the river valley with a downed power line and if it hadn’t been for quick detection and quick action, it could have been a catastrophe.   According to reports, firefighters came from all over the place, and together with our own people, they did a stellar job of coping with the fire. Still hot spots on Monday.

Our heartfelt thanks to all  those firefighters.

U.S. politics captured the media attention last week, with Donald Trump getting shot in the ear and President Joe Biden declining to run for re-election. It was thought the attempted assassination might cool Trump down a bit, and for a few minutes he did sound like a gentler man, thanking God for saving his life so he could save America. It didn’t last, and the Biden news stole his thunder.
