The Cariboo used to be known as horse country. The Chilcotin was particularly horsey. Cariboo Country still has horses, but they aren’t top of the list anymore.
An interesting bit of horse history -- historian Timothy Winegard says that before riding horses, no one wore pants, we wear pants because of horses. Winegard says he likes to think that over 5,500 years ago, “somewhere in the grasslands of the Eurasion Steppe, a teenager jumped on the back of a horse and changed the world.” He says the history of the horse is the history of humankind.
Regarding wearing pants-- men once wore long dresses.

Who will be the candidates in the upcoming B.C. election and who they will run for? After their party was taken out of the race, some BC United Party candidates were adopted by the B.C. Conservatives, some are running as UPs, some as independents, and some aren’t running at all. Michael Grenier, who was listed as the UP candidate for Cariboo Chilcotin, has stepped down.
Not all the Conservative adoptions have gone well. According to reports, Alexandra Wright, the original Conservative candidate for Kelowna-Mission, is suing the party for allegedly defaming her when they turfed her as their candidate last month. She’s upset with the reasons the Conservatives gave for her dismissal. Gavin Dew, once a BC Liberal Party leadership candidate, is replacing her.
Cariboo Chilcotin has a Green candidate, John Kidder, from Ashcroft. He is a founder of the BC Greens. They have an interesting health care plan to upgrade our current system. (I’m glad somebody has.) It proposes a network of community health centres, with access to doctors, nurses, mental health professionals and specialists (dietitians and physiotherapists) under one roof, ensuring “timely, comprehensive care all in one place.”
No more closed emergency rooms?
