When we hear sirens in our communities it always is a cause for concern. But when we hear that it is a school bus that has been involved in an accident off of one of our
roads, it conjures up horrifying images and fears. In the moments following the serious accident where a school bus left the road north of Lac Ia Hache with children, the hearts of our community sank for these innocent souls and their parents at home.

Additionally, we were heartbroken to learn that a good Samaritan passing by who attempted to help these children sadly lost their life. We must never forget this brave act and the loss that this person’s family must be facing. Our province and community are grateful for this kind act and acknowledge the painful sacrifice.

We must come together and show our support through kindness and reflection. We must remember the paramedics, RCMP, hospital staff and other critical caregivers who acted immediately and prevented further chaos and hurt. These are our everyday heroes who run into danger to keep our province a safer place for all. Words cannot express our community’s gratitude for the work these folks do, day in and day out.

As the students, parents, families and community members who were touched by this tragic incident head into the summer months and return home, it’s an important reminder to please mind your mental health and to seek professional help if you think you might need it; there is no shame in it. The residents of the Cariboo Chilcotin are strong, caring and resilient. In times like these, we will always stand together.
