Lake City’s two schools went head to head in two girls’ volleyball games on Friday, Oct. 27, 2023, at the middle school’s gym in Williams Lake, competing in the districts.
The games were close, with the Falcons Grade 8 and 9 girls beating the Grade 10 girls at 25-22 in the first game and 30-28 in the second.
Coach Tim Hurley was as engaged as ever, cheering on the girls from the sidelines.
“These girls work so hard. I’ve never been prouder,” said Hurley.
Hurley has coached many of the Grade 10 girls as well — before they went to the high school and joined Coach Matt Burgar.
“I was really impressed with the energy in the gym at Columneetza, how our team battled backed in the first set, and the level of organization from Tim,” said Burgar. “Athletics in our community are so important and teach these kids so many things about themselves and the value of working hard.”
The school bleachers were full of cheering students, some holding up signs of support.
Grade 9 player Kara McAlpine has been playing volleyball since she was in Grade 7 and said she loves the competition.
“I like how competitive it is, but also how fun.”
Assistant coach Lily Fraser usually plays with the Grade 10s; however, after suffering a broken finger playing in the first volleyball game of the year, she became assistant coach and now helps with practices.
The district games will continue on Nov. 1 in 100 Mile House and will include teams from 100 Mile, Quesnel and Williams Lake. The winner of the districts will go onto zones in Prince George on Nov. 10 and 11.
