Jessica Marcil, David Ferarri, and Shadow, sign up to take part in the Bright Futures 5K run/walk on Sunday, April 27.

Dion Hall is a Grade 12 student in Williams Lake and an avid runner.

But if it wasn't for the BC Children's Hospital, the young man may not have been able to run at all.

Born with a club foot, which meant his foot was pointed in and down, his foot needed casting and bracing and other treatments to enable proper function. His family spent extensive time back and forth from the BC Children's Hospital as he underwent the various procedures and treatments to correct the foot.

So for his graduation "capstone" project, Hall wanted to do something involving both the sport he loves and the facility which made it possible for him to run.

So on Sunday, April 27, Hall gave a brief speech giving the story behind his inspiration for putting together a fundraising 5 km run/walk event in Williams Lake, to participants before they headed out on the course. He called it Bright Futures 5K.

The event was supported by Williams Lake Recreation and the Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex, Cariboo-Chilcotin Foundry and Community Policy Citizens on Patrol. Participants paid a registration fee of $25 per person or $40 per family, with all proceeds going towards the BC Children's Hospital.

There were 78 participants pre-registered and many people registering in person on the day of and Citizens on Patrol volunteers helping to keep people safe on the course.
