Some of the Williams Lake high school mountain bikers competing in high school provincials brought home some top finishes.

The BC School Sports High School Provincial MTB Championships were in Powell River on May 22 and 23.

Evan McMath of Lake City Secondary School finished second in the Junior Boys Enduro race event, which had 389 riders on the day of the event.

Rhys Vath of Lake City Secondary School placed second in the Senior Boys Enduro event, which had 393 competitors start the race.

Kalan Vath of Columneetza Junior Secondary finished fourth in Bantam Boys, and Matthias Goodrich, also from Columneetza, was 11th in the same event, which had 166 racers competing on the day of racing.

Nadia Wallin of Lake City Secondary was the only female rider to take part in the provincials for Williams Lake, and she finished sixth in the Senior Girls XC event against 123 other riders and 14th in the Senior Girls Enduro event against 103 other racers.

Fourteen students from both Lake City Secondary School and Columneetza Secondary School went down to race in the provincial championships on the Sunshine Coast.

Riders each rode an enduro race and a cross country race.

During an enduro event, riders are required to complete both uphill and downhill stages for a race, but only the downhill stages are timed. So while enduro mountain biking utilizes both uphill and downhill riding skills, only the downhill portion is timed for the competition.

Cross country mountain bike races are continuous races over a distance, timed to include the entire route.
