The Lake City senior girls volleyball team were in Quesnel last weekend for the zone championships.
Six teams came together to battle it out on the court, with Dawson Creek Secondary School coming in first place and Kelly Road Secondary School coming in second. Both teams will go to provincials because of their wins at the weekend tournament.
Although the Williams Lake athletes put up a good fight, they ended with a sixth place finish. However, according to coach Raj Lalli, the team did come home with the “Most Sportsmanlike Team” award.
“When you’re competing against teams like Prince George who get a lot more practice, it’s sometimes difficult to match the skill,” she said. She noted that bigger schools often have more athletes to draw from as well.
Despite the last place finish, Lalli noted that it’s still great to come out to the zone tournaments to give the athletes more exposure to the game and to get younger athletes interested in the sport of volleyball. The team will be graduating two players this year but is looking forward to a great next season.
