Grayson Vickers, 32, has been promoted to head coach of the Peninsula Panthers.

The Peninsula Panthers are reloading with a one-two punch of passion and pedigree – moving Tyler Stanton from behind the bench into the front office, and handing the reins to former Panthers player, Grayson Vickers.

Fresh off their fourth Brent Patterson Memorial trophy, the Panthers announced Friday that Stanton will now serve as director of hockey operations while continuing in his role as general manager.

It’s a shift that pulls the longtime coach off the bench but keeps him firmly in charge of the big picture – recruiting, development, and building a program that lasts.

“Having this separation in the role allows for further focus on and off the ice, to promote, expose and further progress our players to both the next junior levels and collegiate levels,” the 2024-25 VIJHL coach of the year said. “We were lucky enough to succeed last year, this allows us to spend further time to succeed for years to come.”

The change also opens the door for a familiar face to step into the spotlight.

Grayson Vickers, a former Panthers defencemen and assistant coach, will take over as head coach for the 2025-26 season.

Vickers has been behind the bench with the club since 2023, but his history in Panthers colours goes back more than a decade – he played 135 games for the team between 2011 and 2014, and was part of this year’s run to become VIJHL champions.

Now, at 32, he’s earned his shot to lead the charge.

“I’m incredibly honoured to step into the role of head coach for the Panthers,” Vickers said. “Having proudly worn the Panthers jersey and worked with the team for the past two years, this opportunity means a great deal to me.”

Stanton, who guided the team to its league title this past season, didn’t hesitate to endorse his replacement.

“I am beyond excited for Grayson, and the entire organization as we switch gears towards a higher development path to open greater opportunities for our players,” Stanton said.

The excitement is shared at the ownership level.

“Both men bring incredible passion for player development and program excellence,” said Minority Owner Madelyn Murphy-Homer. “In their new roles I am confident we will continue to see our program strengthen and flourish.”

The 2025-26 VIJHL regular-season is expected to commence in early September.
