Kangaroos best Stampeders in close match in Quesnel

Two of the top three teams battled it out on the ice Friday at the West Fraser Centre

The Quesnel Kangaroos faced the Williams Lake Stampeders Friday at the West Fraser Centre with the Roos taking a 5-4 win over the visiting team.

"It was a really good hockey game," Roos head coach Jordan Draper said. "It was like a playoff game, we're the top two teams in this division and every game is a battle against them."

In the first period, the Roos started strong taking an early lead with a goal from Chad Kimmie in the first few minutes of the match and another from Brody Dyck shortly after. Kimmie's goal was assisted by Cole Senum and Dyck's by Eli Jarvis and Brody Dale.

The Roos grew their lead in the second period, despite the Stamps' Austin Kuhn scoring the period's first goal, the Roos brought it up to 4-1 by the end of the period with Eric Galbraith scoring, assisted by Jordan Low and Brody Dale and Cole Senum also getting one in the net with an assist from Brody Dyck and Alessio Tomassetti.

But things started to look more difficult for the home team in the game's third period after the Stampeders scored three goals and tied things up. Austin Kuhn was the first Stampeder to score in that period and was followed up by Jaydon Merritt and Corbin Marcotte.

It looked like the game would be going to overtime, echoing the first game of the season these teams faced each other. But the Roos had other plans with just over a minute left in the game, Brody Dale landed a shot in the net unassisted and handed the Kangaroos the win.

"It's a nice feeling," Draper said. "I thought our power looked really good, our goalie was outstanding as always and we got contributions from three different lines so it's pretty tough to stop."

The Roos don't have another home game until Feb. 1. They're on the road facing the Terrace River Kings on Jan. 25, Prince Rupert Rampage on Jan. 26 and they're facing the Stampeders again on Jan. 31 in Williams Lake.
