One hundred and seven archers descended upon the Kamloops Bowbenders’ outdoor archery range to compete in the 2023 BC 3D Championships June 17 and 18.
The 13 Cariboo Archers who attended, walked away with eight medals collectively (five gold, two silver and one bronze). Cariboo Archers had more podium finishes than any other B.C. club, according to Al Campsall, archer and coach for the Cariboo Archers.
Dan Mobb’s returned for his first major competition in many years to win third in Instinctive Men (Recurve).
“A great result,” said Campsall of Mobb’s effort.
Another stand-out effort came from Fred Streleoff winning first in Longbow Men with three bull’s-eyes in a shoot-out against a fellow Canadian Team member. Ernie Schmid won third in the same category, which Campsall described as “hotly contested.”
Lee Jackman took first place in Compound Fixed Pins, defeating a Canadian Champion Glen Shaw by 20 points.
Campsall said Jackman, along with Adam Lyons and Dylan Marlow all shot very well in the closely-contested category, with Lyons narrowly missing the podium.
“Lee also overcame some adversity Saturday morning when an incident, beyond his control, almost made him miss the start of the event,” said Campsall. “A stressful time, but Lee ‘rallied’ and showed that he was a true champion.”
Alexis Comber won in the Under 21 Traditional Women category by 28 points and Melanie McComber won the 50+ Traditional Women’s category by 103 points.
Cara Fraser narrowly missed winning gold in Known 50 Women, reported Campsall, still on the podium with a second place finish in her first BC 3D Championships.
Also in her first ever BC Championships, Shayna Van Tine placed fourth, narrowly missing a podium spot in Compound Fixed Pins Women.
Once again, 14-year-old Lily Fraser stood on top spot, taking first place in Under 18 Compound Women by 92 points. This is her third first place finish this season, as she had already won the Indoor Canadian 3D Championships, and the BC Indoor Target Championships.
Campsall himself took second place in the Compound Unlimited 60+ Men after “fighting his way back” after what he called “self-inflicted” equipment issues.
Several Cariboo Archers were named to the BC 3D Team and Alternates to receive sponsorship money to shoot for BC at the Canadian 3D Championships slated for Cranbrook in early August. Lily Fraser, Fred Streleoff and Al Campsall received the honour of making the team, with Fred and Al as alternates. Lily will receive money to attend the Championships and all three will have a chance to earn money if they make the podium.
