In just under two weeks time, hundreds of youth hockey players will converge at the Cariboo Memorial Complex for the fourth Annual Central B.C. Aboriginal Youth Hockey Tournament.

The tournament, scheduled for March 11-13, will see approximately 20 teams from Chase, Vernon, Kamloops, Prince Rupert, Prince George and the Williams Lake area compete in initiation, atom, peewee, bantam and midget divisions.

Trophies will be awarded to first-, second- and third-place teams and awards will be given out for best goalie in each division, along with MVP medals and Aboriginal Youth Hockey Tournament hoodies for first place teams.

On the tournament hoodies will be a logo selected by the tournament’s organizing committee, who recently held a logo contest to choose this year’s official tournament logo. Youth in the community were invited to submit their logo ideas to the committee.

Taking first place in the logo contest was Keith Booth, while Nesika elementary’s Zach Horvat took second. The third-place logo was drawn by Nesika’s Shemica Harry.

The tournament also features an elaborate opening ceremonies which includes players, coaches and First Nations leaders who will all take to the ice to enjoy drumming, dancing and singing performances.

The opening ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, March 12 at 1:30 p.m. and everyone is invited to attend.

The committee is also asking anyone interested in volunteering to contact them. Volunteer positions include: coaches, assistant coaches, timekeeping, score keeping, raffle tables and organization, 50/50 sales, security and opening ceremony.

If you are interested in volunteering contact Sheila Kelalst Booth at 250-302-9868 or e-mail sheilabooth_2011@shaw.ca.

Also, any interested players who are not yet on a team can contact Kelalst Booth to be placed on a team.
