Every year the Tribune partners with Cariboo Chilcotin Partners for Literacy to talk about our very favourite subject — literacy.
Whether we realize it or not, we all exercise our literacy skills every day.
From making a grocery list, to reading a map or instructions, to financial matters and using a computer or even a smartphone, literacy is a big part of our everyday lives.
The individuals who volunteer and work with CCPL dedicate themselves to helping others improve their literacy, thus improving their lives.

They work with seniors to offer workshops on power of attorney, how to avoid scams, computer literacy and will also assist those who need a hand filling out forms such as Canada Pension Plan. They also offer a reading program for seniors.
Also through CCPL, the Urban Aboriginal Engagement Program offers workshops on financial literacy and assists individuals on everything from legal matters to technology to upgrading and more.
Thursday mornings at the CRD library, Partner Assisted Learning also offers group tutoring on computer basics, as well as one on one tutoring for adults.
PAL is also just finishing up a pilot program to foster literacy with youth where they hired eight high school students to tutor youth one on one after school Thursdays at the library.
Janette Moller of CCPL said she is most proud of how many of her learners come full circle and give back to CCPL by helping others once they are on their feet.
“The learners become part of us,” she said.
