Hey North Saanich residents, if the bike race that closed West Saanich Road (Mills Road to Mctavish) on May 30 disrupted your coming and going, you should let the district know. Apparently, I am the only one.

The district says they sent out notices to those affected (I didn't get one). The district has not commented on the small print size of road signage (illegal by highway standards). The district believes that closing a major traffic route (West Saanich) at a busy time of day (4-8 p.m.) was acceptable.

Does common sense suggest closing a busy route when traffic is most busy, for a bike race, is a good idea? In terms of effective messaging, think about signage for upcoming repaving: the dates are in large print so a driver will register that something is going on (and may prompt them to slow down and read further), unlike the signs about the race.

Send your thoughts. Expect good decisions from your municipal staff. And don't let private clubs control public infrastructure.
