Re: letter to the editor pertaining to pesticide safety, K. Jean Cottam, Efteen, June 2.
It is my understanding that there are many dioxins, but the type primarily found in 2, 4-D has not been demonstrated to be particularly harmful.
I would assume that in view of the fact that more than 1,700 studies about the safety of 2, 4-D have not uncovered ill effects and that it can’t be all that bad.
As for the statement that 2, 4-D was invented for military purposes, I know that is false.
I was raised on a wheat farm and I can remember how delighted my parents were when they first began to use it on their wheat crops in the 1940s.
I have used it for more than 60 years, (I am 83), sometimes to the extent that I could taste it for half an hour after I finished spraying.
I may be an isolated example but I don’t feel it has been harmful for me.
Meanwhile, I am happy to have a lawn without dandelions and a ranch practically free from burdock, kochia, and thistle.
