A By-Election for (1) Mayor will be held March 1, 2025. Are you eligible to vote? Is your name on the current list of electors?
If you are unsure, you can find out by calling 250.245.6400 or visiting City Hall at 410 Esplanade. The office is open from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm, Monday to Friday (excluding holidays).
ADVANCE ELECTOR REGISTRATION
Advance elector registrations will be accepted at City Hall until 4:00 pm on January 7, 2025. Elector registrations will not be accepted during the period January 8 to March 2, 2025, but will be accepted on voting days. Electors wishing to register for the first time must bring two pieces of identification that provide evidence of identity and place of residence (i.e. Driver’s Licence, BC ID Card, BC Care Card, Social Insurance Number Card, credit card, phone or hydro bill or property tax notice). Once piece of ID must contain your signature.
ELECTOR QUALIFICATIONS
- 18 years of age or older on general voting day; and
- a Canadian citizen; and
- a resident of British Columbia for at least 6 months immediately before the day of registration; and
- a resident of the Town of Ladysmith; and
- not disqualified under the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting in an election or assent voting and not otherwise disqualified by law.
Non-Resident Property Electors:
- 18 years of age or older on general voting day; and
- a Canadian citizen; and
- a resident of British Columbia for at least 6 months immediately before the day of registration; and
- a registered owner of real property in the Town of Ladysmith for at least 30 days immediately before the day of registration; and
- the only persons who are registered owners of the property, either as joint tenants or tenants in common, are individuals who are not holding the property in trust for a corporation or another trust; and
- not entitled to register as a resident elector; and
- not disqualified under the Local Government Actor any other enactment from voting in an election or assent voting and not otherwise disqualified by law; and
- if there is more than one registered owner of the property, only one of those individuals may, with the written consent of the majority of the owners, register as a non-resident property elector.
LIST OF REGISTERED ELECTORS AND REQUEST TO OMIT OR OBSCURE
Beginning January 14, 2025 until the close of general voting for the By-Election on March 1, 2025, a copy of the list of registered electors will be available for public inspection at the Town of Ladysmith City Hall at 410 Esplanade, during regular office hours, Monday to Friday, excluding statutory holidays. Before inspecting the list, a person must sign a statement that they will not inspect the list, make copies, or use the information included in the list, except for the purposes of Part 3 - Electors and Elections of the Local Government Act. An elector may request that their address or other personal information about them be omitted from or obscured on the list of electors. The elector must make this request to the Chief Election Officer or the Deputy Chief Election Officer before January 7, 2025.
OBJECTION TO REGISTRATION OF AN ELECTOR
An objection to the registration of a person whose name appears on the list of registered electors may be made in accordance with the Local Government Act until 4:00 pm on January 24, 2025. An objection must be in writing and an objection may only be made by a person entitled to be registered as an elector of the Town of Ladysmith and only on the basis that a person whose name appears on the list of electors has died or is not qualified to register as an elector of the Town of Ladysmith.
