UPDATE: RCMP investigate threat that evacuated Vernon high school

Potential safety concern prompts school to let out early, 75th anniversary celebration postponed

Police are investigating a threats report that resulted in the closure a Vernon high school yesterday.

Police received a report about a threat that had been made against W.L. Seaton Secondary on Thursday, May 15, at approximately 1:30 p.m.

In response to this information, school administration initiated an evacuation of the building to ensure the safety of staff and students.

Officers attended the school to support the evacuation and conduct their investigation.

It has since been determined there is no credible threat to the safety of the school and normal activities have since resumed.

Our top priority is the safety and security of our schools, said Const. Chris Terleski, media relations officer for the Vernon North Okanagan RCMP. We understand situations like this can cause concern and recognize the impact they have on the overall feeling of safety in our community. These types of are taken very seriously and we are continuing to investigate the matter.

ORIGINAL May 15:

Students and staff were evacuated from W.L. Seaton Secondary today (Thursday, May 15).

Superintedent Karla Mitchell said the precautionary measure was taken, "after we received notification of a potential safety concern."

RCMP and district staff have been supporting and ensuring that all safety measures have been taken.

"Ensuring the safety of our students is our top priority. Both the RCMP and the school district have been collaborating closely to manage the situation and maintain a safe environment for everyone during the evacuation," said Mitchell. "RCMP are continuing to investigate."

The school was scheduled to celebrate its 75th anniversary tonight, but the event has been postponed.

This is the second North Okanagan high school evacuation in two days.

Enderby's A.L. Fortune Secondary staff and students were dismissed early following a bomb threat, which RCMP later said nothing was found to substantiate it.
