An ATM is in ruins after firefighters faced an unusual structure fire call in downtown Victoria on Tuesday (May 27).
Around 5:30 that evening firefighters were called to a downtown mall where they quickly identified a blaze isolated to a single bank machine inside a financial institution attached to the mall.
“Heavy smoke conditions were present throughout the bank, but thanks to a fast response, the fire was contained to the ATM itself,” Victoria Fire Department said in a social media report.
Crews forced entry into the machine using irons and knocked down the fire with a dry chemical extinguisher – dousing any chance of the fire spreading into the building. Firefighters then focused on ventilating the space. While sprinklers were activated in a small room behind the bank machines, none inside the bank itself went off.
A fire investigator attended the scene. One individual on site reported they were using the machine at the time it caught fire and requested assistance retrieving their card.
