Heat nearly breaks second Vernon record in a week

Temperatures meet and exceed 1969 records: Environment Canada

Another temperature record has been made amid a hot spring in June.

The mercury reached 32.8 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, June 11. That ties the daily record set back in 1969 in Vernon, where records have been kept since 1900.

Earlier in the week temperatures actually broke records when it reached 34.5 in Vernon on Monday, June 9. That beats the 1969 record of 33.9.

Only two other communities broke records June 11: Castlegar reached 35.2, beating the 1918 record of 32.8 and Clinton reached 27.9, breaking the 2019 record of 25.2.

Now there is a severe thunderstorm warning for the region.

Environment Canada is forecasting showers or thunderstorms Thursday, June 12, with a high of 26.

A 30 per cent chance of showers is called for Friday, June 13 with a high of 22, while the likelihood of precipitation raises to 60 per cent overnight.

Sun is in the forecast Saturday with a high of 24 and a chance of showers overnight.

Temperatures may get as hot as 27 Sunday and 29 on Monday before dropping to 26 and 25 respectively on Tuesday, Wednesday.
