City council may choose water, sewer option for Woodland Drive

Council made some preliminary decisions about water and sewer services for Woodland Drive Tuesday evening.

Discussions at the committee of the whole  resulted in council choosing the one option that, according to the engineering report, provides “the least amount of disruption to the travelling surface of the road,”  which is projected to reduce costs due to a decreased need to repave.

The chosen design requires the installation of a pipe along the entire roadway length of Woodland Drive at a cost of $1.3 million.

That cost estimate does not include the water-pumping station needed to maintain water pressure.

The total cost of the system, including water distribution, sanitary sewer collection and water pumping station, is estimated to be $3.5 million.

The system will bring water to the boundary of the properties.

Residents will be responsible for paying to bring water to their individual homes.

The plan does not include the provision of fire hydrants due to limited water capacity and pressure. Property subdivision would not be permitted. Home owners would also have to decommission their existing wells and septic systems.

Council also elected Tuesday night to apply to the federal government for a grant to cover 75 per cent of the project’s cost.

The plan must still come to council for final approval.
