A two-vehicle crash that saw one vehicle flip over and catch fire is affecting Friday commuter traffic in North Surrey.
The intersection of 96 Avenue and 161A Street is closed after a late-afternoon accident on Friday, May 9, a Surrey Police Service press release reports. Shortly after 4 p.m., RCMP Surrey Provincial Operations Support Unit (SPOSU) officers responded to reports of a two-vehicle collision.
SPOSU officers, along with Surrey Fire Service, attended to find one vehicle on its roof and on fire, the release notes. All occupants of both vehicles had safely gotten out, and firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire.
A Black Press freelancer at the scene reported that bystanders had pulled people out of the flipped vehicle before emergency crews arrived.
The freelancer also reported that the flipped vehicle had rolled over onto its roof and come to rest nearly a block away from the impact. B.C. Emergency Health Services was also on scene to attend to and transport people involved.
The cause of the collision remains under investigation.
"At this early stage, it is believed that the speed of at least one of the vehicles may have been a contributing factor," the release noted.
Motorists are advised to find alternate routes, as the intersection of 96 Avenue and 161A Street will continue to be closed while police investigate and crews clean up the collision. The City of Surrey's Traffic Management Centre reports on X/X that 96 Avenue remains closed from 160 Street to 162A Street.
