Global Affairs says it is aware of approximately 55 Canadians currently detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
In a statement to Efteen Friday (July 4), it says that number of Canadians detained is as of June 27. The statement added that this number of cases is "typical at any given time however the number fluctuates as cases are resolved, and new cases arise."
Global Affairs added that consular officials provide consular assistance to those detained, but due to privacy concerns further information would not be shared.
A 49-year-old Canadian, Johnny Noviello, died while in a U.S. federal detention centre in June. He was found unresponsive the afternoon of June 23 while being detained at the Bureau of Prisons Federal Detention Center, according to a news release from U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement June 26.
