Williams Lake hosts a weekend of soccer, hockey, swim events

Lots of sports to watch live in Williams Lake on the Feb. 10 and 11 weekend

Sports enthusiasts in Williams Lake had a lot of live sports action options Feb. 10 and 11 with soccer, hockey and swim events in the lakecity.

Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex hosted both the Cariboo Dental Frost Fest Swim Meet and a U18 hockey tournament, with lots to see on both sides of the facility.

Teams from Kamloops, Prince George, Lillooet, Vernon and Williams Lake were on the ice on Feb. 9 for the U18 house team hockey tournament.

Organizers managed to plan 22 games for the 11 teams entered in the tournament, and while it was a lot to coordinate, they said it is all about the players.

The Williams Lake Blue Fins Swim Club also hosted the Cariboo Dental Frost Fest Swim Meet for much of Saturday, with teams from Prince George, Quesnel, Kamloops as well as the Williams Lake Blue Fins.

Swimmers were in the lakecity for their last chance to qualify for the divisional championships in Penticton in two weeks. Teams from Penticton and north across B.C. will be competing for provincial spots.

Swimming at the complex went from noon Feb. 10 until about 4 p.m. and from 9 a.m until noon on Sunday, Feb. 11.

Annika Stalker of the Blue Fins had her sights set on the club record for the 100 m intermediate medley. Going into the meet, she was only 10 one-hundredths of a second off the record and she ended up smashing it by three seconds. Annika was first in her age category.

Rowan Smith also set a new club record for the 100 m intermediate medley as well.

First time swimmers Lili Bjornson and Gavin Francis both swam an intermediate medley, Lili in the 100 m and Gavin in the 200 m.

Julien Alaire, Eleanor Dean, Lilly Reedman, Hunter Stokes, Jordyn Stokes, and Emmeline Theriault all had new divisional qualifying swims. There were also over 200 new personal best times, said Amanada Nemeth, assistant head coach.

It was also the annual indoor soccer Sweetheart Tournament. Both the Williams Lake men’s and ladies’ indoor soccer associations worked together to organize a weekend tournament near Valentine’s Day. It was the 11th annual tournament and games took place at the Lake City Secondary School both Feb. 10 and 11.
