Thunder Mountain opens season Friday, June 13

Qualifying begins at 5 p.m. and racing starts at 6 p.m. while the pit gates will open at noon and the spectator gates at 3 p.m.

WL Forestry/Napa Thunder Mountain Speedway opens it racing season Friday, June 13.

There will be Hornets, Legends, Thunders racing as well as the WESCAR late model touring series.

Qualifying begins at 5 p.m. and racing starts at 6 p.m. while the pit gates will open at noon and the spectator gates at 3 p.m.

On Sunday, June 8, the racing club hosted a meet-the-drivers event at the Williams Lake Stampede Grounds from 2 to 6 p.m.

Despite the heat, people arrived to check it out, including a cooling kiddies pool.

Board member and public relations coordinator Brielle Gagnon said it was an opportunity to acknowledge the volunteers and sponsors who support Thunder Mountain.

She said ECO360, under the direction of area fleet manager Shawn Lapp, has come on board to sponsor WESCAR this year.

"They painted all our garbage cans," Gagnon said.

Gagnon has been involved with Thunder Mountain since 2008 as a first aid attendant.

"They asked me if I would come on the board," she said.

Attending the event were Central Cariboo Search and Rescue, Daily Stash Cannibas, Wild and Immersive - the forest school, Inland Truck and Equipment, some food vendors and some of the drivers.

Asher Hollet, 16, is a Grade 10 student at Lake City Secondary School who is just starting to race this year for Riske Creek Racing.

"I was in the pit crew last year and helping out a year ago with the track truck," he said. "I always wanted to race and when Riske Creek Racing told me they didn't have a driver I decided to do it."

As he showed off the 1991/1992 Mustang he'll be driving, he said he doesn't own it.
