The Oceanside Running Club Association presented a $7,800 giant cheque to Haven Society and Forward House Society.

The Oceanside Running Club Association was in the spirit of giving.

The group donated $7,800 to be shared by the Haven Society and Forward House Community Society. A cheque presentation was held at the Parksville Community Park on Thursday, Dec. 10.

The fund was proceeds from ORCA's successful Mother's Day 5K and 10K run in Qualicum Beach in May. Both Haven Society and Forward House Society also received donations from individual participants in the Mother's Day event.

"Every donation and effort toward our cause plays a vital role in helping us provide essential services to women, children, and families in our community," said Nina Nunes, Haven Society community engagement co-ordinator. "This generous donation from ORCA will bring joy to our clients, making a meaningful difference and creating a brighter, safer future for everyone. It takes a community to end gender-based violence."

Nunes added donations help them provide some extra joyful moments during the holiday season for clients who are in crisis.

"Forward House will use the funds for programs and services that we provide to Oceanside folks dealing with mental health and addiction challenges," said Rosemary Bonderud, president of Forward House. "One of the major expenses is for groceries as we provide lunch six days a week and dinner three nights a week. Next week members of our board of directors are serving a full Christmas dinner with all the trimmings to 45 Forward House clients - lots of fun. We also will use the ORCA funds for field trips and outings that require extra staff and transportation costs."
