Lake City Secondary School seniors girls basketball team emerged the winners of a home tourney held Saturday, Jan. 13.
In their final game against Shas Ti Kelly Road Secondary School from Prince George, the LCSS Falcons won 53-32.
Four teams participated in total.
The other two teams were Peter Skene Odgen Secondary School from 100 Mile House who placed third and Corrileau Secondary School from Quesnel who placed fourth.
“I am so proud of my team,” said captain Joey Augustine who is in Grade 12 and has played basketball since Grade 8. “We worked really hard and I think we really came together as a team.”
Coach Danielle Cofrey is new to the school, but played basketball in the Fraser Valley and has lots of experience.
“I am just proud of these girls because they haven’t had anyone to support them and help them,” she said. “They have grown so much in such a short time.”
Happy to be able to mentor the players, Cofrey said they are doing amazingly.
It was the team’s first tournament of the season.
Shas Ti Kelly Road coaches Angela Zavaglia and Helena Kemper said it was their team’s first out-of-town tournament of the year.
They are hosting a tournament the weekend of Jan. 20 with five teams possibly travelling to Prince George to participate.
“It was fun,” Kemper said.
“We were glad to be here,” Zavaglia added.
Sir Alexander Mackenzie Secondary School originally planned to attend the tournament, but cancelled due to inclement weather that closed the school on Friday, Jan. 12.
