Atom

The atom Cowichan Bulldogs lost 35-19 to Nanaimo Beast mode this past weekend despite a keen effort.

"The team played outstanding, keeping the score close and even having the lead early on in the game," said head coach Tyler Gavin. He said Carter Thorne ran the ball well, picking up big first downs and throwing aside defenders.

"The birthday boy Xander Modeste played amazing with big blocks opening up lots of space," Gavin said.

"Defensively we rallied to the ball well, making big-time hits and lots of group tackles," the coach added.

Teagan Hale showed out early making a big tackle to open the game while Oliver Cherriere used his speed to great effect.

The team continues to grow and get better and are now preparing to play a big Victoria Spartans team in Victoria.

Peewee

Put another win in the books for the streaking peewee Bulldogs. The team beat a strong Nanaimo Legion of Boom team 22-8.

"It was a big game seeing kids stepping up and playing great football," said head coach Justin Young.

Standouts included Damian Montoya and Fynn Bellis, who had two of the biggest catches on the game.

"Damian scored the lone touchdown through the air," Young explained.

Rylen Heyer scored two touchdowns on the ground — one on a five yard quarterback sneak on the goal-line — and the other on a 25-yard scamper set up by a monster block from Aiden Carey.

The team's defence was led by Jace Woodworth with seven tackles and Rylend "Blondi" Monti with five. The lone sack on the day came from Felix Bernardi.

"We have some much needed recovery time coming ahead with some bye weeks, so our injuries can heal," Young said. "I am so proud of the fight our team has shown thus far this season."

Junior Bantam

The junior bantam Bulldogs burst out of the gate in their game against Nanaimo this past weekend with their defence, special teams and offence all firing on all cylinders.

After a strong opening kick from Kalem Thomas, the team tackled the returner on his five-yard line. The defence then forced a three and out with the Bulldogs' special teams forcing a short punt to give the offence stellar field position on the 25 yard line.

"We got down to the one-yard line on a nice run by Eli [Atchison]," head coach Opie Williams said. "Kasen Randhawa punched it in on a QB sneak and then Kalem Thomas made the extra point."

A lapse in the second quarter allowed Nanaimo to score but that's as close as they'd get.

On the ensuing kickoff, Kalem Thomas ran it back 70 yards for a touchdown and the team went into halftime with a six point lead.

Atchison added to the lead at the start of the third quarter when he broke several tackles during a 35-yard touchdown run.

Also on offence, Harrison Plaxton was a receiving force while on defence, Charlie Freeman led the team and made some key stops, along with stellar play from Oaklan Boiurelle, Otto Teufel, Blake Ryan, and Casper Dewan.

"I personally want to thank Football Nanaimo," Coach Williams said. "At the start of the game the captains came over and shook my hand and said 'Good Luck and sorry for your loss' of my late wife. I love the fact that the football community has supported me after the passing of my wife from Cancer."

The JB Bulldogs travel to Victoria this coming weekend.
