With a week of play under their belts, 22 teams will play in the Ice-Breaker Slo-Pitch tournament in Williams Lake the first weekend in May.
“We have 31 teams in our league this year,” said Williams Lake Slo-Pitch league president Linda Barbondy-Rich. “There are more than 800 people registered. We are definitely one of the largest adult sport organizations in the community.”
Every year the ice-breaker is a kick-off to the season for the local players.
Each team will play a two-game round robin based on standings from the end of last season.
Starting on Friday evening, May 3, resume at 9 a.m. on Saturday, and Sunday.
The first round of playoffs will begin Saturday at 4:30 p.m. and the finals will begin 3 p.m. on Sunday.
Barbondy-Rich said she is also proud of the newly-installed low mobility outhouse, with two stalls, at the ball fields.
“West Fraser donated some of the materials such as culverts, plywood and logs,” she said, adding all of the wood being used is material that could not be sold or used elsewhere.
The slo-pitch outhouse was installed on Monday, April 29 with the final touches Tuesday, April 30.
Barbondy said she and Brian Hanson with minor soccer are coordinating a project of building six low mobility outhouses for the Esler Sports Complex. Two at the slo-pitch fields, two at the soccer fields and two for the low mobility walking trail.
“Brian and I are also the organizers that are in charge of building the walking trail,” she said, adding Peter Arnold Log Homes is volunteering a lot toward the project.
Through the season it will be the league’s responsibility to keep the outhouses clean and supplied with toilet paper and soap.
