Buses and Handydart services will be free on Oct. 19 in order to facilitate voters reaching polls on provincial election day.

Whether your truck broke down or your wife took the car, there is one less reason not to cast a vote on Saturday, Oct. 19, B.C.'s upcoming provincial election day.

Williams Lake city council voted to wave transit fares on Oct. 19 in order to ensure there was no financial barrier to people who needed a bus to get to polling stations for the provincial election.

"This is to promote the democratic process," said Mayor Surinderpal Rathor as council approved the motion to provide free transit. He emphasized how lucky we are in Canada to have the right to vote, one which many people around the world only wish they could have.

"It's your choice," he said and encouraged people to exercise their right to vote.

Both regular bus services and Handydart services will be free for users for the day.

BC Transit approached city staff about offering the free service to encourage voters to get to the polls.

The estimated lost fare revenue for the day would be $300-350.

Voters should have already received a voter card in the mail with information on polling station locations, if a voter is unsure where they can vote, they can look for a list of polling locations and advance poll options online at: https://elections.bc.ca/2024-provincial-election/where-to-vote/ or wheretovote.elections.bc.ca

Polls will be open on Oct. 19 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
