The annual Turkey Soup for Christmas will once again be offered at Petro Canada in Williams Lake.

Once again a Williams Lake gas station will be hosting some warmth for Christmas.

Petro Canada at 750 Oliver Street in the lakecity, will be the location for a person serving up free turkey soup for anyone who wants a hot meal over the holidays.

While the Salvation Army served turkey on Dec. 23 for lunch and the annual Yuletide Dinner also provided a turkey dinner for folks who otherwise may not get one, those all take place before Christmas.

For the past four years, an anonymous person brings soup to the station to offer it up for the community. Soup is served from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The generousness of the organizer then has fostered more generosity in the community as well, with people able to drop off other gifts and food items on Christmas Day. She said while she stresses out leading up to the day, she is relieved when people show up with more to offer and share.

While the Petro Canada itself may not be open, the organizer said the new owner has kindly donated some cups and will allow them to use the site whether the store is open or not.

People can also drop off donations of hats, gloves and socks at the Petro Canada station ahead of time, all of the donations will be given out to those in need who stop in on Christmas.

Last year, two large commercial pots of soup were given out to people, including people on an eBus. Passengers on the bus had not been able to find anywhere open to get food along the route up until they arrived in Williams Lake, so when the bus passengers were able to enjoy some hot turkey soup, they were incredibly grateful.

Over the holidays, the only options for those without homes to go to are fairly limited, as service providers and volunteers get to take much-needed breaks.

The Salvation Army drop in, a regular spot for many to stay out of the elements during the day, is normally open during the week, but closes Dec. 24 ot Jan. 3.

The Cariboo Friendship Society operates an overnight shelter which people can use from 4 p.m. to 10 a.m..

Canadian Mental Health Association operates the Hamilton emergency shelter as well, which accepts clients from 5 p.m. to 9 a.m. overnight.

If the temperatures dip below -20 with wind chill, Hamilton staff said their clients are allowed to remain indoors during the day as well.
