Work to replace a sanitary sewer main and a water main on Hammond Bay Road will start this week.
The project will install new underground pipe between the Turner Road and Rutherford roads intersections, so commuters can expect single-lane traffic along the stretch of road for significant periods during the project’s construction phase starting June 30, according to a city press release.
The infrastructure upgrade is being done to ensure reliable service and the ability to accommodate population growth, the release noted.
Single-lane alternating traffic will be in place Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and first priority for travel through the site will be given to pedestrians, cyclists and public transit.
Motorists are asked to turn off vehicles while waiting in queues.
Once the underground work is complete, the project will wrap up with paving and replacement of aging traffic signals in spring 2026.
"This is a busy stretch of road, so we recommend that commuters plan ahead,” said Phil Stewart, City of Nanaimo engineering projects manager, in the release. “If your route is going to take you in this area, make sure to set aside extra time for delays. If possible, plan an alternate route."
