VIDEO: 150 Mile students donate 1,000 food items to Salvation Army

Students at 150 Mile Elementary held a contest in their school to collect food donations for Salvation Army

Grade 5 and 6 students with 150 Mile Elementary School organized a food drive in their school, collecting 1,000 food items for the Salvation Army food bank in Williams Lake.

"We're learning about global hunger as a world problem," said the class' teacher Brandi Vath as she explained why they decided to organize the food drive. "The kids wanted to do something and they kind of generated the idea," she said.

With big smiles and helping hands, the students delivered the food donations on Tuesday, May 6 directly to the food bank.

"We were making a contest for it too," said Hunter Modahl, one of the students helping to bring in the food. He said each food item a student brought over the last month was equated to a certain amount of points, and the class with the most points got to throw a Sunday Party with the field trip money available to Vath's class.

"Your kindness and dedication remind us of the power of community and the importance of looking out for one another," said Tamara Robinson, community ministries director for the Salvation Army in Williams Lake. Thanking the students, staff and families of 150 Mile Elementary, Robinson said the donations make a meaningful impact and help feed families as they face challenging times.

"Thanks to your efforts, the food bank has been able to reach more people and provide much-needed relief. We appreciate each and every contribution and the thoughtfulness behind them."
