UPDATE: Victoria police investigate 'suspicious' laundromat fire

Police and fire department at scene of Quadra Street fire

A business at the corner of Kings Road and Quadra Street started Thursday (June 12) behind police tape after a fire overnight.

Victoria fire crews were called out around 3 a.m. to a structure fire at 965 Kings Rd.

Quadra from Hillside Avenue to Bay Street was closed to traffic as Victoria fire quickly dealt with the blaze. There were no reported injuries.

Victoria Police Department and the Victoria Fire Department remained on scene investigating and ventilating well into morning.

The fire caused significant damage, and police forensic investigators are looking into the cause, which was not immediately apparent, a VicPD spokesperson told the Victoria News.

"The cause of the fire remains unknown, but due to the extent of the damage and the unidentified source, it is currently considered suspicious."

Despite the significant damage next door, the adjacent coffee shop avoided major smoke damage and opened for the day.
