Victoria will roll public institutions into its deep dive into recycling in the city.
Coun. Jeremy Caradonna hit a home run pitching the motion to council Thursday (June 19) to have staff explore the feasibility of including schools, libraries, and community centres in an expanded municipal solid waste collection service.
City staff are two years into a look at a municipal solid waste collection service for multi-family buildings, with a report expected in the fall. Now it will include information on potentially providing the service, at a fee, for schools and other institutions such as community centres.
The Greater Victoria Teachers Association reached out unofficially to say most, if not all, schools in SD61 are not recycling and asked if the city could get involved, Caradonna explained during the June 19 meeting. The association subsequently offered a formal request for the city to have a look.
When talking to staff, they and Caradonna saw an opportunity to expand the work already underway looking at multi-family residential solid waste collection. That exploration expanded to include a look at other sites such as community centres and other public institutions.
The addition doesn’t “tie our hands to anything,” Caradonna assured council. It will come as part of an expanded scope of the work already underway.
