Steel picnic tables removed from Williams Lake parks for repairs

'They get beat up pretty badly,' said the city's chief administration officer

Steel picnic tables with chairs attached in the covered areas of Boitanio Park and Spirit Square on Oliver Street have all been removed to undergo some repairs.

"We had to take them back for cleaning, repairs and painting," said the city's chief administrative officer Gary Muraca. "They get beat up pretty badly."

There are, however, still some wooden picnic tables at the Borland Street side of Boitanio Park.

Muraca said the  washroom in Spirit Square had to be closed on Friday, Oct. 4 also due to damage.

Public washrooms at Boitanio Park and Kiwanis Park are now closed, normally done at this time of year, to prevent freezing in the winter.

Muraca could not confirm when the table repairs will be completed.

"Other tasks are taking a priority as we get ready for winter," he said.

At this time, he confirmed, there are no plans to install portable washrooms in any locations within the city during the winter.

"They get destroyed and there is not much interest from others to provide the service," said Muraca.

"We will explore the need and risks within a couple of weeks."

The washrooms at Scout Island, which are heated, will remain open, Muraca said.
