The Springwood Elementary PAC is one of 11 provincial organizations that will receive Tire Stewardship BC grants that will go towards the school's new schoolyard playground facility.
Tire Stewardship BC is an environmental not-for-profit group dedicated to the collection and recycling of scrap tires in British Columbia.
The Springwood PAC will be using materials for the playground created from recycled tires. Some 1,164 recycled tires will be used for the playground initiative.
“We’re excited to support these cities and organizations through our TSBC 2025 Community Grant Program,” said Rosemary Sutton, executive director, Tire Stewardship BC. “We’re confident these projects will gain lasting value from incorporating B.C.’s recycled scrap tires. Rubberized surfacing is not only durable and low maintenance, but most importantly, it allows accessibility for all users.”
When tires are returned for recycling in B.C., they are transformed into new rubber products like playground surfaces, fitness tracks, and walkways that enhance and revitalize community infrastructure and spaces.
B.C.’s scrap tire program has been recycling tires for more than 30 years, and it is the oldest recycling program in Canada. Since the scrap tire recycling program was first established in BC in 1991, more than 122 million tires have been recycled in the province.
