Nanaimo residents are being targeted with scammers using a 'City of Nanaimo' call display.

The city issued a notice on Thursday, July 10, informing residents that the scammers are not Nanaimo city employees and are using a spoofed number.

"City of Nanaimo employees do not regularly call to ask for payment information and will not ask for a social insurance number or password over the phone," the city stated.

If someone suspects that a potential scammer is pretending to be a city employee, they should hang up the phone and call the city's main line at 250-754-4251 as verification – even if a City of Nanaimo phone number is shown on the call display.
