Salmon Arm power outage allegedly caused during theft, or attempted theft of ATM

About 200 hydro customers initially affected by outage

Crews continue working to restore power to residences affected by a power outage sparked early Monday morning in Salmon Arm.

A section of 10th Street SW by the Highway 1 intersection remained closed to traffic throughout the day on May 19 as utility crews worked to restore power to roughly 200 customers. As of 2:30 p.m., BC Hydro reported 12 customers remained affected by the outage, which occurred at 3:45 a.m.

BC Hydro listed a motor-vehicle collision as the cause of the outage. Local businesses, however, were informed the incident had to do with the theft, or attempted theft, of an ATM machine at the Shell service station at the Highway 1 intersection. Businesses at the Mall at Piccadilly were closed until the afternoon. Save-On-Foods reportedly reopened late in the day after staff there moved refrigerated items into cold storage trailers and then back into the store.

The Observer has contacted the RCMP and will provide more information as it becomes available.
