Saanich is changing its garbage collection routes to balance truck payloads, increase capacity, and reduce emissions. The new routes take effect Friday, March 28.
Up to a third of households may see a change in their collection day. To ease the transition, Saanich will offer supplementary garbage bag pickups and allow free drop-offs at the Saanich Operations Centre. A special pickup is also scheduled for March 31 for about 2,800 homes facing an extended gap in service.
The changes align with Saanich’s Climate Plan by reducing truck travel distances. The district says similar adjustments last July led to a 13.3 per cent drop in fuel consumption by December, cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 6.54 tonnes.
Residents can check updated collection schedules online at saanich.ca/greenergarbageday or through the Greener Garbage app. Carts must be placed at the curb by 7 a.m. on collection day. Missed pickups can be reported to greenergarbage@saanich.ca.
