The Falkland and District Community Association is pursuing funding for the second phase of its Centennial Projects, and to build a new grandstand on the Stampede Grounds.

They can’t provide cash but they can offer support.

Columbia Shuswap Regional District directors were unanimous in agreeing to provide a letter of support for the Falkland and District Community Association at the April 17 board meeting in Salmon Arm.

Under the new rules for dispensing Community Works Funds managed by the Union of British Columbia Municipalities, the regional district can no longer provide direct funding to non-profit community groups.

In view of this, Area D Director Dean Trumbley asked CSRD directors to support the Falkland and District Community Association’s request.

“This is critical work we started for our community hall and rodeo grounds,” he said.

The association is applying to the Legacy Fund through Canadian Heritage for money for the second phase of its Centennial Projects for the Falkland Community Hall in order to update the stage, electrical upgrades, acoustic upgrades and to paint/update the outside of the building.

The association is also applying for funds to build a new grandstand on the community’s Stampede grounds to replace the stand that had to be removed five years ago due to safety concerns.

“With these funds, we can improve both of these properties to create more opportunities for more cultural, musical and artisan type functions that will be beneficial to our community as a whole,” wrote association president Sabrina Ujma.
