The Town of Qualicum Beach officially opened the waterfront viewing platform and walkway, which serves as a gateway to the waterfront and community.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held marking the culmination of years of collaboration and effort from local contractors, both current and previous town councils, First Nation partners, and numerous partner organizations who worked together to bring this incredible vision to life.

Mayor Teunis Westbroek with town council, along with Qualicum First Nation Chief Michael Recalma, Courtenay-Alberni MP Gord Johns and other guests cut the ribbon to celebrate the opening of the new features to the waterfront, situated near the Memorial Avenue/Highway 19A roundabout.

The elevated walkway will enhance user safety and accessibility. It has a separate bike lane for cyclists, and also a path for those with mobility challenges.

The viewing platform will serve as popular destination for both tourists and locals, offering a place to pause and appreciate the stunning views of the Beach Creek estuary and Salish Sea. To complement the platform, the area is outfitted with attractive street furniture and interpretive signage, creating an informative and welcoming environment.

The project cost $3,022,989 with nearly two-thirds, $2,038,471, coming from support from multiple provincial and federal grants. Funding in the amount of $519,833 was received by BC’s Destination Development Fund, $1,018,638 through the federal government’s Active Transportation Fund, and $500,000 from BC Active Transportation.
